ISFAHAN, Feb. 15 – American documentary maker Sean Stone, the son of Oscar-winning director Oliver Stone, has converted to Islam in Iran, where he is filming a documentary. He chose the Muslim name of Ali as announced at the ceremony held in the Iranian historical city of Isfahan.
"At school, when I was studying history, they presented the history of Islam in the framework of dictatorship," Sean Ali Stone said at a press conference here at FNA on Friday.
He pointed to his personal experience about Islam, and said "When I was with Muslims, I read (the holy) Quran and accepted Islam as a religion of equality and brotherhood."
"I have converted to Islam and accepted that Hazrat Mohammad (PBUH) is the prophet of Islam. I hope I could present a true image of a Muslim to the West."
Stone who visited Iran several months ago said he needed to know more about Persian culture and civilization and become familiar with Iranian traditions and rituals.
Stone referred to Iran as one of Asia's major filmmaking centers saying that he "would like to introduce Persian culture and civilization to the West."
The 27-year-old filmmaker is a graduate of history from Princeton University and has collaborated on many of his father's projects. He has also directed a handful of documentaries.
