According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, as of November 2015, the top three nationalities of the over half a million Mediterranean Sea arrivals since the beginning of the year are Syrian (52%), Afghan (19%) and Iraqi (6%).
Europe is facing an unprecedented refugee crisis, which has escalated over the summer. The continent is now divided over how to deal with the flood of people, mainly Syrians fleeing the war in their homeland.
According to UN estimates, 300,000 people have left the Middle East and Africa so far this year for a better life in Europe.
