In Tehran derbi, held at the packed Azadi Stadium, Esteghlal defeated Persepolis 2-0 with an excellent performance that took it to the top of the Iran Professional League (IPL) standings.
Majidi gave Esteghlal the lead after 15 minutes. The unmarked Esteghlal captain put the ball into the back of the Persepolis net from inside the six-yard box.
In the second half, Persepolis took control of the match, but its strikers missed their opportunities.
Persepolis captain Ali Karimi was brought down by Pejman Montazeri in the penalty box four minutes into the second half, but Mohammad Nouri’s penalty kick fell wide of a goalpost.
Jabbari, who was also chosen as the best player of the match, gave Esteghlal a 2-0 lead in the 82nd minute after an excellent pass from substitute Arash Borhani.
Esteghlal is now on top of the IPL table with 16 points after seven weeks, and Persepolis plummeted to 14th place with a mere six points.
Esteghlal and Persepolis have played against each other 71 times, with Esteghlal winning 23 games, Persepolis taking 17 victories, and 31 matches ending in a draw.
